Public support for same-sex marriage in the United States has grown at an increasing pace since the 1990s. In 1996, just 25% of Americans supported legalization of same-sex marriage.
On May 20, 2011, a Gallup poll showed a majority support for same-sex marriage for the first time in the country above 50%. In May 2013, a poll showed that 53% of Americans would vote for a law legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states. A Washington Post/ABC News poll from early 2014 found a record high of 59% of Americans approve of same-sex marriage, with only 34% opposed and 7% with no opinion.
Just now, over 230 milions of Americans (73% of population) live in the 36 states and the District of Columbia where same-sex marriage is legal.

Maybe because I count 36 blue states, but plus Washington DC would do 37... but I think u are right that its hard to say
